Many people emigrated from Europe
to America in the late 1800s. Many wanted freedom and economic opportunities. However,
cheap farmland and the industrialization helped too. The immigrants escaped
from the bad times and poor conditions to a land of opportunities.
Most of the immigrants who arrived before the American Revolution had died and
the immigration stopped, until 1880 when larger steam-powered ships replaced the
old sailing ships, which increased the immigration. Nearly 25 million Europeans
made the long trip; this was the third flood of immigrations to America.
