During the time the Anglo-Saxons lived in England there were several kingdoms in England, and their names can still be found in regional names. Most og the Anglo-Saxons were farmers so their language was full og words related to farming such as sheep, ox and field, which we use today.
When William won the battle og Hastings the system og Old English broke down and middle English became the new english, which is quite similar to the English we know today.

How?
The Great Vowel Shift is what we call the process og standardizing English. That happened in the 16th century. The London standard became dominant, specially in printed scripts. That gave prestige to London English, since it was associated with knowledge. Trough the printing press, spelling became standardized, and the Modern English was a reality.
